Better Bar

Better Bar was a circular-economy venture that turned used restaurant cooking oil into retail soap. I led the six-person team behind it, from sourcing and pricing to selling at local markets, where we sold out five times in a row.

Selling

Selling an Unfamiliar Product

Telling someone our soap was made from used cooking oil usually came with questions, especially because we were a team of students without a professional science background. I had to figure out how to make the product feel credible without overexplaining it.

At markets, I started by letting people experience the soap for themselves. They could smell the different scents, pick up the bars, look at the packaging, and try a sample before I got into how it was made. For the questions that came up most around safety and cleanliness, I made an infographic that explained the process and cited reputable sources, and I got better at walking people through what actually happens to the oil when it becomes soap.

Over time, I had a much clearer way to handle skepticism at the booth. That became the approach I used across our markets, where we went on to sell out five times in a row.
